Not sure about you, but have you ever thought of how much more thankful you could be every single day? I tend to ponder on this almost everyday.
These words have stuck to me recently – “If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, ‘thank you,’ that would suffice.” ~Meister Eckhart.
The word of G-d is very clear on how our attitude affects our daily life. The author of proverbs exemplifies on this by saying in Proverbs chapter 23 verse 7 “7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. As one who reckons, he says to you, eat and drink, yet his heart is not with you [but is grudging the cost].”
An attitude of gratitude has nothing to do with what you have, or where you come from; it’s all about the heart and mindset.
I am in the process of learning just as much as you are, it takes practice to put gratitude in effect. By nature humans are selfish and self- worshiping. By doing this we make an idol of ourselves.
In order to have a true attitude of gratitude idols must be removed. With an attitude of gratitude one can truly love his neighbor as he loves himself and serve the creator with all his heart soul and mind.
When you make an idol of something it takes energy and the best of you is zapped. A quick understanding of how idolatry is related to being unthankful is shown in exodus chapter 32. “Come, make us gods[a] who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”
If you continue reading Exodus chapter 32 it explains that Aaron Moses’s brother was a partaker of this idolatry by being an engineer of this idol. People had quickly forgotten their covenant with the true and living G-d. When you forfeit the true and living G-d for an idol, true gratitude cannot be attained because you will worship something and that something will not allow you to express true gratitude.
Self worship is the demi god that has replaced the true and living G-d. The worship of the mind is the false god of this era. I believe Romans chapter 8 verses 5-9 explains this well “For those whose lives are according to the flesh think about the things of the flesh, but those whose lives are according to the Spirit, think about the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind-set on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind-set on the flesh is hostile to G-d because it does not submit itself to G-d’s law, for it is unable to do so.”
To live and attain a life of true gratitude it requires a true surrender of heart. The heart and mind not submitted to the holy one blessed be he is idolatry in its highest form. This idolatry has been the root cause of the worlds problems ranging from greed, envy, arrogance, lust, murder, rage, violence of all sorts, bitterness, jealousy and the list goes on.
Here are some things to be gracious for daily that will cause a paradigm shift if practiced. Express gratitude for having a home to sleep in at night if you have one. Be gracious for loved one’s that are still alive, be thankful for the friends that you have. Be thankful for physical health and if you have poor health be thankful for the air that you breath. If you have sight be thankful for your eyes that function to allow you to see, and if you cannot see but can hear these words be gracious for that. Be thankful if you have two legs to get around if you have legs, if you do not have legs be thankful for your heart that beats and brain that functions.
The list can go on and on. So to those that read this make it a habit and practice as much as possible to foster an attitude of gratitude. Express it immediately and see what happens.
Helen Keller – “I thank God for my handicaps, for through them, I have found myself, my work, and my God.”
