The narrow gate …

By Jennifer Moreno

I always find it interesting when I hear people say that “Christians” are narrow minded, well, we actually are! But it’s not in any type of arrogant way, it’s simple, Jesus didn’t pave a broad road, but a narrow one. One where it requires a commitment to Him and obedience.

Jesus says we are not of this world. Not meaning “world” in the literal sense of living on this planet, but the cultural mentality. Today we live in a culture that is spiritually dead and hostile to God, our faith and values.

There is no broad way when you follow Jesus, there is only but one narrow road and one path to get to the Father. When Jesus spoke he said “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.” (John 10:9)

Jesus is the gate. And to be even more specific Jesus said “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

The way of the world is basically the easy way, there is ungodliness, waywardness, immorality and so on. That road is literally the “Highway to Hell” and there are no conditions, you are free to be and do what you want with your desires. The problem is that road has consequences and it only leads to spiritual and physical death.

The “narrow way,” in contrast, is a difficult road because you intentionally choose to deny yourself, your sinful nature and follow Jesus. You are a living sacrifice and everyday you commit to follow Jesus and not the world. Following Jesus requires you to carry your own cross, to run your own race and obey the word of God. Not everyone is a fan of this road, it’s a hard road to follow but the benefits are eternal and there you will find life.

Some people believe or say that all religions lead to God, but that is NOT true.

Not all religions teach the same thing, they are all different in fact. All religions function on human achievement, but Christianity does not.

Jesus already paid the price for your sin on the cross when he died and rose again. We are saved by His grace and by our faith, no works involved here. But if you receive grace and are born again, with a new life, God wants to see you bear good fruit and not bad. In other words, you are committing your life to Jesus and there is no looking back, no more longing for your past and wanting to continue in “habitual sin” or sin that doesn’t convict you.

There is no doubt that being a follower of Jesus requires full commitment, not half, not 80, not 90, but 100 percent. Don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s OK to continue in sin and you can follow Jesus, Jesus loves you and He wants to give you life. In order to find life, you must follow the narrow road.

Matthew 7:14- “For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

God bless you and may He be with you as you walk this narrow road and win the race.
