Resting in the Holy Spirit

By Jennifer Moreno & Jeremiah Model

Rest is vital to a human being functioning properly. In order for a human being to have adequate energy to fulfill life’s important roles, one needs sufficient rest.

Therefore sleep should be a priority for everyone because sleep plays a critical role in the function of a human being. For instance, sleep helps the immune system run smoothly, it’s necessary for cellular reproduction, metabolism, memory, learning, recovery and other important functions.

According to the CDC an estimated 50-70 million US adults have sleep or wakefulness disorder. Not having enough sleep can trigger chronic issues like hypertension, diabetes, obesity and an onset of depressive thoughts.

Romans 14: 16-18 says that the Kingdom of G-d is made up of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

In order to have peace you must have rest and in order to find true peace you must find G-d.

In the eyes of the world, there is no payoff for resting, in this world in order to be successful you must work hard and not rest. Like the saying goes “Time is money,” so you must plow, you must fertilize, you must plant to see the harvest.

But in G-d’s eyes, in order to be successful you have to rest and work. In order for you to function properly, your spirit, your body, and your mind need rest.

But what does it mean to rest in G-d’s presence? G-d invites you to join into this rest and to experience that peace that He can offer you through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is G-d’s spirit.

To tap into the Holy Spirit all you have to do is call on it and worship. When you allow the Holy Spirit in your mind and soul, you immediately let go of all distractions like social media, T.V., kids, or anything else that can disrupt your peace. All you need is 10 minutes to step away from the cosmos, call on the Holy Spirit to fill you and a sense of peace will hover over you.

Other ways to rest in the Holy Spirit is to sing songs of praise to the Lord, you can read the Bible and meditate on His word, pray, converse with G-d or take a walk with him. That’s how you rest in His presence.

But sometimes you feel troubled or depressed, frustrated or angry and none of these things can get you out of it. What you do? G-d wants you to be reminded that He came here to give you an abundant life, He wants you to be happy and help is on the way, persistence is the key with prayer when things are not going well. .

Search for that abundant life which Jesus speaks of, Jesus says He gives us an abundant life and prepares our hearts with a mature love… where we can endure pain and suffering. That’s a promise and G-d keeps His promises.

Ephesians 5:19 says we should let our spirit dwell in us richly, causing us to have a song in our heart, an attitude of thanksgiving and a submissive spirit.

No misery or depression can exist in such a heart. We must learn to practice and praise the Lord for all things. We must be thankful in everything (1 Thess. 5:18).

It sounds easier said than done, but when you begin to practice it, you start allowing the Holy Spirit to work in you. When you find yourself thinking negative and depressive thoughts…think on positive things, things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely and of good report (Phil 4:8), to put those bad thoughts to rest.

In the end we must remember the Lord’s promise, He says he will give strength to his people, He will bless his people with peace.

1 John 3:19 says – “This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence.” If our minds stay on Him, we will keep us in perfect peace.

Roman 8:6 says – “For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” So we must focus on the Holy Spirit dwelling in us to find that life and peace.

Remember what Jesus said to us in John 14:27 – “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you: not as the world gives, give I to you. Let not your heart be trouble, neither let it be afraid.”

May the Lord of peace himself give you rest always. The Lord be with you all.
