When King Solomon was building the first temple in Jerusalem called the ‘Beit HaMikdash’ by the sages meaning house of holiness and ‘Beit YHWH’ in the Bible meaning house of G-d; he was not thinking man I am going to use the cheapest labor, the most valueless metals, and the worst designs possible in building G-d’s house. The house of G-d had tons of gold and precious medals inside of it. G-d took pride in his building.
Mikdash is a combination of two Hebrew words ‘makom kodesh’ with ‘makom’ meaning place and ‘kodesh’ meaning holy. Hence the ‘Mikdash’ is the Holy place where G-d has stamped his name.
In a excerpt by Rabbi Dr. Hillel ben David (Greg Killian)describes the ‘Beit HaMikdash’ he quotes Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin, the renowned student of the ‘Gaon of Vilna,’ said that the commandment to construct a Tabernacle is primarily a personal commandment; every Jew is “a living tabernacle in miniature.” HaShem which means name of G-d rests the ‘Shechinah,’ His Divine Presence, primarily in the human heart.
In comparison this is very similar to what Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 when he said, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price.” Therefore honor G-d with your bodies.
When G-d says to honor your bodies he means literally to honor your bodies. Webster definition of honor means a source of credit or distinction, high respect, and esteem.
The physical part of honoring your body is making sure no impurities enter your body that can damage your body. For instance, substance abuse, junk foods, chemicals, sexual immorality, what you watch and listen to, etc.
Think about this for a second – you only have one shot in this life. Why not at least take care of this amazing piece of art called the body? According to Chinese medicine the face of a human being is the window to health. The body has natural abilities to heal itself do to the intelligence it was created with. When we give the body the right foods, exercise, and input it will perform better, fight off foreign invaders, and keep us energized.
When we do not, it will do the opposite, we will feel lethargic, depressed, anxious, worried, sluggish, irritable. You will likely gain weight and your body will be highly susceptible to disease. Keep in mind that what you put in your body is what stimulates your body as far a cellular regeneration, and all foods affect your organs either positively or negatively. To sum it up, ‘you are what you eat.’
About 100 years ago, our food did not have all of the pesticides and waxes it carries today. So why do we need it today, when we can simply choose to eat organic.
With all the technological advances in the world and still obesity rates are sky rocketing, various cancers and heart diseases are on the rise as well.
The question to ask is why? I believe the word has an answer to this in Hosea Chapter 4 verse 6 – it explains “my children are destroyed because of a lack of knowledge.”
Knowledge is accessible especially through the internet. Eating healthy can be done cheap and easily, there are tons of online easy recipes to follow and exercise routines. There really is no excuse not to take care of your body especially since G-d wants you to have a healthy body, mind and spirit. It’s his body, not yours.
I believe King Solomons words are the best concerning this topic. Proverbs 25:2 says – “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.” Will you be that King or Queen that G-d called you out to be, to search a matter out especially when it comes to your temple? You decide.
